November Learning Communities -

November Learning Communities

November Learning Communities (NL) offers a way for teachers to communicate with students, and parents. In order to be part of this learning community educators must subscribe to one of three plans.

Plan I –Software Basic plan. It costs $999 for the first 1000 students and $499 for each addition 1000 students. It allows for unlimited number of individual sites and one year telephone and online support. You are allowed 10 hours of telephone support per year.

Plan II –Software and training plan. Everything is the same with Plan I and Plan II with the addition of an extra $999 for 1 training day. The $999 will cover one day training by a Certified November Learning Trainer. In addition you will be expected to pay travel expenses.

Plan III – Software and two day training plan. Plan III basic costs are the same as plans I and II with the addition of $1999 for two days of training. In addition to the $1999 there will also be travel expenses.

The NL Communities software helps educators set up a web based communication tool. It is a course management system. The NL software is advertised as being very simple to use and adaptive to most curriculum areas.

NL Communities software makes it possible to setup a page choosing from several different themes. It gives the community administrator options of control that fall under seven main headings. These include; manage posts, moderate comments, manage categories, manage articles, add links, add feeds, change, theme, advanced settings, my gallery.

By utilizing the available tools the site administrator has the option of creating posts, editing, or deleting posts made to the site. They may also create different categories for posts. Some of the categories that could be set up might include notes, homework assignments, or even published student work samples.

They may moderate comments to their site. This option allows for approval, disapproval, or deletion of comments made to the site from other individuals. They may also elect to have a comment sent to their e-mail address prior to publishing it on the site.

Pictures may be downloaded to the site and managed through a photo album option. The administrator may add links and feeds. They are given the opportunity to change the theme of their site as often as they wish.

NL offers an educator’s guide online. It is a 45 page downloadable document that walks through the steps of using their software. It is very simple to read and gives many different illustrations of the screen options.

There are some NL Communities to be found on their website. It appears to me that perhaps the communities listed are some that have opened their sites to a broader audience. You may want to take the opportunity to explore some of the material available on this site. I think it is probably a sampling of what would be available if you were a software subscriber.

As I look through the communities that are available for viewing they remind me a lot of the blog sites that some of my classmates are creating using Bloggers.com. Bloggers. com is free!

Hi Crystal.
I see the comments about the expense. Remember that this product, like Blackboard and other commercial course management products, provides PROTECTION through authenticated accounts. This means you can do things with some degree of safety.

Blogging in general does not offer the same degree of protection and little or no technical support when needed.

Everything has a price!
Dan
